Healthy Youth Survey for 10th Graders

On October 17th, our school will participate in the Healthy Youth Survey (HYS), which will be administered to all 10th-grade students. This survey has been conducted in Washington state and has been taken by youth since 2002. The survey offers a valuable opportunity for students to shape the future of our state. The results from the survey are used by communities, schools, and public health agencies to inform policies and programs that support the well-being of youth.

The survey is voluntary, and students can skip questions or stop taking the survey at any time. There is no penalty for not participating, and a student's grades will not be affected. If you do not want your student to take the survey, an opt-out form is available in the main office. Alternatively, your youth can inform their teacher that they do not wish to take the survey. Students who do not participate will be given a different activity.

Survey Topics

The HYS asks students about their well-being, social relationships, mental health, and substance use. Some of the topics covered in the survey include:

  • Feelings about school and community

  • Relationships with parents, friends, and neighbors

  • Physical activity and food access

  • Substance use

  • Behaviors related to safety and violence

  • Gender identity

  • Sexual orientation

  • Sexual behavior and violence

If you would like to review the questions, you can find them on the Healthy Youth Survey webpage.

Protecting Student Information

The survey does not collect a student's name, and there are no codes to match a survey to a participant. Survey responses are stored on a secure server with restricted access. The individual-level responses are combined and summarized in reports for schools and districts. Datasets with individual responses are also made available to approved users, like local health departments and researchers, through a data-sharing agreement process.
